J & K at Toronto Fashion Week – David Dixon F/W 2013

30 Mar

Loves!

This was our first time at Toronto Fashion Week, our first time attending a fashion show of this magnitude, and our first time really getting out there and talking to SO many bloggers, stylists, buyers, merchandisers, and just down right amazing people! Such a rush!

We were lucky enough to attend the shows on both Day 2 and Day 5, thanks to a very good friend of ours Catherine. After a bit of a taste, you can only imagine how zealous we were that we weren’t able to be in attendance the entire week. None the less, here are a few shots of us at the tents! Out of the designers we saw, one of the first and also one of our favourites was David Dixon!

David Dixon was all about women empowerment! The show began with a video where a woman was frowned upon when making a comment in regards to the gentlemen’s conversation. Showcasing that women should not speak for we do not know half of what men know. Men are smarter than us but then the screen shatters and says ‘bullshit!’ It was probably one of the best openings I (J) saw from all the shows that we watched. The one aspect that really popped from Dixon’s show was the neck feature of all the feathers! I absolutely adored it! I could really see this being a trend for next fall. I know I’ll be rocking it! 🙂

David Dixon’s show was definitely very empowering. The music was enticing (insert Run The World by Beyonce here) and the models looked and felt so comfortable and sexy in his clothing. The strong lines of blacks and whites, the pop of cobalt blue, and who can forget about those stunning crystalized accessories in everything from earrings, ear cuffs, necklaces and bracelets. Such a fantastic finishing touch to these sophisticated, yet edgy looks. Here are a few shots of us enjoying the tents after the show 🙂

Top 10 Beauty Bits from Sephora

7 Jan

It’s a brand new year, and for a lot of people, this means that a new life change may be in order. For others, maybe a few small changes that can really impact how you feel this year. Is your makeup routing becoming mundane and repetitive? We know the feeling, and we are so excited to try out several different make-up looks this year. Lots of color for the lips, cheeks, and a few different hairstyles every now and then too. Makeup is definitely one of the easiest ways to transition your look from day to day – even from day to night! Maybe you’ve never worn a red lip? Shimmery eyes? Coral cheeks? Anything that can really make you look and FEEL confident, stunning and the centre of attention?

Well let me tell you.

Every girl, every woman loves to feel pretty. We all like to feel desirable, and feel good about ourselves, and I just feel that you can never go wrong with a little somethin, somethin from Sephora. I see Sephora as a euphoria of playgrounds. It’s a place where so many possibilities can blossom from. A lipstick color can completely change your look, a sweep of the right shade of peach blush can take you from tired to glowing, the perfect black eyeliner can complete that sultry smokey eye on a Friday night and a spritz of perfume can change your mood overall. I experience all of these feelings whenever I walk into a Sephora.

Here are some picks that caught our eye, and are anxious to try out. Oh, and guess what else? Everything is under $50 (your welcome)

Let’s start with the base, shall we? Every girl needs a good moisturizer. I know, I know. You’ve heard it all before, but it shocks me when I talk to someone who says they hardly use a quality moisturizer, but then complain when their skin is lacking luster as the seasons change. During this cold season, I have been inclined to try out Philosphy’s Hope in a Jar. (One of Oprah’s all-time favorites, I’ll have you know) 4.oz for $52 (Yeah, yeah, $2 over – but worth it!!)

hopeinajar

Now this 2nd product is one that both of us are HUGE fans of. We were both lucky enough to attend the grand opening of the new Sephora at the Eaton’s Centre back in November, and in our goodie bags, we received a deluxe sized sample of ‘No.28 Primer Serum’….This primer..is nothing short of amazing. Now I, (K) am a big fan of primers, and I have used almost all of the best primers out there. This one takes the cake. The “28” in the product’s name refers to the formula’s key ingredients, which include 14 essential oils, 10 lipid-rich plant oils, and four vitamins. Water-resistant, neutralizes redness to create an even skin tone, minimizes the appearance of all visible pores, fine lines, imperfections and extends the durability of all makeup applied on top of it. Julie, on the other hand had never used a primer in her life, so she started off with the best! Our makeup stays on all day, and looks flawless. Now..the downside is this primer is $75! Yes. Take that in. That’s the price for 1oz, however .33oz is $26 which is most likely what we’ll be going for. Amazing product! Must-have in any make-up kit.

Sephora Collection – Moonshadow Palette In the Night
I love the colors in this palette. The name speaks for itself. There is a perfect collaboration of browns, blues, greys, blacks and neutrals to create a subtle to intense smokey eye. Def a palette any girl would love to have ready to pull out for any occasion. $36.00 – K
MOONSHADOW

High Brow by Benefit, $26

Kathleen picked this up for me as part of my Christmas gift, as I had been wanting a great eyebrow highlight for a while now. It’s perfect for swiping right under the arch for some lift and brightness. This pencil comes in 2 shades, however only the soft pink is advertised on the Sephora website. I own the “champagne pink” tone which has a bit of a more gold sheen which is perfect for my skintone.  – J

Nars Blush in Albatross, $28

20121227-203006.jpg

This blush hands down can be used as an illuminator and works great! I’ve used this time and time again. It’s a must have on my list. It will give you that perfect glow for the night and looks great in photos. – J

Now, we’ve all heard the rave about BB creams. Who hasn’t come out with a BB cream yet? I’m surprised I haven’t seen the makers of Dawn dish soap come out with a multipurpose BB cream. It almost makes it difficult to choose which one is best for you – however the numerous amount of positive reviews on Smashbox’s Camera Ready BB cream can’t be denied, and for fresh, flawless and even looking skin, while also getting the moisture and SPF protection we all need? This one’s a winner. This BB cream comes in 5 shades and is available for $39

Dior Show Black Out Mascara, $25

20121227-203227.jpg

This mascara extends the lashes and is the blackest of the black! I love putting this mascara on cause it really opens up my eyes and my lashes are so long, they look magnificent! – J

I have been needing a really good finishing powder to set my foundation, and I’ve been pretty satisfied with M.A.C.’s blot powder, however never really fell in love with it to begin with. Tarte is a brand I’m quite fond of (their Amazonian Clay Blush in “Tipsy”?..uh. Love), and this finishing powder, so rightly named as the “Smooth Operator” has me intrigued. Available for $36

Stila Seeing Stars Smudge Eyeliner set, $32

20121227-203655.jpg

I think this eyeliner set is fabulous! Especially all the colors they provide are colors we can use for everyday as well not just going out. – J

Nars Lipstick in Fire Down Below, $24

20121227-205245.jpg

This semi matte lipstick is like a blood red colour which fits into the show stopper category, you can do no wrong with a red lip after all. – J

The Nutcracker

6 Jan

Lovelies,

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending the Nutcracker at the National Ballet of Canada. One thing you might not know about me is my obsession with the Nutcracker. This past Christmas I watched The Nutcracker films, listened to the Nutcracker Orchestra soundtrack every night, literally. Ever since I was a little girl I enjoyed the Nutcracker to its fullest and having the chance to see it live was an absolute dream come true!

The ballet was fantastic! I always get drawn into the costumes! All the glitter and sequins worn by the Snow Queen and the Sugar Plum Fairy. All the 19th century attire worn by the children and families in the first act! Not to mention the masks and makeup on the Nutcracker himself, the Fox, the Bee and all the many other characters at the Sugar Plum Fairy’s Kingdom!

Once the doors were opened at the theatre, walking in felt like I was stepping into my imagination, back to when I was a little girl with her Nutcracker by her side. The set was unbelievable! It was so magical and the creativity that goes into creating this story was incredible!

Oh and the music!! The Orchestra was heaven! It just brings peace and happiness to me. Listening to the violins, clarinets, flutes, basses, etc has a way of calming me down.

Now to the most important part, all the dancers! The ballerinas moves were so delicate, smooth and graceful. They were all so elegant and their postures were impeccable.

Honestly it makes me appreciate and want to support the Arts even more, it seems like Toronto has so much to offer but I feel like it’s not promoted enough. There’s not much awareness so I hope this post opens your eyes to all that Toronto has to give to its citizens and tourists!

“Somehow during this night the children have passed together throughthe magical yet natural portal between childhood and adolescence, and somehow they know that their lives will never again be quite the same. Henceforth, like their friend the Nutcracker, they will set forth to find and follow their own dreams” (Act II, National Ballet of Canada ‘The Nutcracker’).

Lovelies,

After lots of contemplating I’ve finally put together my Holiday outfit for Christmas Eve dinner 🙂 Can you believe I bought this skirt two months ago and saved it to wear for the holidays! My Daily Face

25 Nov

I love cosmetics! If you didn’t know before, you do now! Everything beauty related is up my alley. Here is a quick rundown of the products I use on a daily basis for work, lunch with friends or just running errands.

1. Makeup Forever Mat Velvet + Foundation in #25: This is my HOLY GRAIL foundation. It goes on smoothly, with a beautiful, matte finish and lasts hours. I apply this foundation and most of my other liquid foundations with my Sephora Airbrush #55 foundation brush

2. M.A.C.’s Blot Pressed Powder: I use a kabuki brush from ELF to press this over my foundation to set it in place and keep it matte. I really like this powder, however I have yet to find a powder I absolutely love (I use shade medium)

3. Garnier’s Anti-Dark Circle Eye Roller : This is another HG product. This acts as two products in one. This formula has caffeine to wake up the under eyes; combined with mineral pigment to conceal dark circles. There are unfortunately only 2 shades, light and tan which have worked out for myself and Julie perfectly.

4. Sephora eye curler : Not much needs to be said. It does the job

5. L’oreal Million Lashes original formula (this is important) I love this mascara with everything I know, and believe me, I’ve tried many ! It’s a chunky, rubberized brush with tons of bristles that catch the last right at the root – love this. I always need q-tips to clean up my lids – this is a must!

6.Annabelle Eyebrow Pencil in Auburn: I actually have been going back and forth between this pencil (which is fantastic for redheads) as well as a brow powder. I like to fill in the middle of my brows with this, then brush and shape it out using an angled brush. I love this brow duo by Benefit

7.NARS Blush/Bronzer Duo: I actually just received this in a goodie bag from the brand new opening of Sephora at The Eaton’s Centre and am smitten with this product. I’m one of those girls that was scared to use bronzer, and trust me, I still use a fairly light hand, but the 2 of these give me face a great flush of color – perfect for work, and with a heavier hand and a bold lip? Perfect for working a night out too! I also really love the blush “Cubic” by M.A.C for an everyday blush.

8. Lips – when it comes to lips, I switch it up a lot. I usually have on a pink gloss over some lip balm for casual days. On my lips below is Shu Uemura’s lip gloss in Pale Shimmery Melon

What do you think?

3 Wants, 2 Needs, 1 Lust

4 Oct

3 WANTS:

20121004-132653.jpg

Slouchy hat:

Ok so I don’t know the proper term for this hat regardless this hat is purrrfect for the fall! Not only is it so cute with loose curls and a dark lip but it protects your ears from the chilly cold. It’s a great add on accessory to your outfit where you won’t go unnoticed 😉

20121004-185510.jpg

MAC lipstick in ruby woo:

I discovered this lip shade from watching a makeup tutorial by ‘makeup by camila’ on YouTube. Camila used this colour and it looked absolutely gorgeous! It’s a great colour for day and night and I’ve been thinking about incorporating more lip shades to my look so this shade would be a fabulous start!

20121004-190232.jpg

Zara leather jacket:

Now that it’s fall season you must own a leather jacket! This item should probably be on the Need list because it is essential! As the weather changes, wool coats are not to be brought out just yet but a simple sweater isn’t enough. Leather jackets are just the right piece to add onto your everyday look!

2 NEEDS:

20121004-190448.jpg

Rag and Bone booties:

I’m in love with these booties! Its an amazing bootie to wear everyday to work and school. Not too high of a heel so you can wear them for long hours and it just adds a little style to every look. Lalalovee!

20121004-190701.jpg

H&M Tweed blazer:

For fall 2012 a tweed blazer is the right choice! Its a classic really. Tweed blazers will never be out of style, thats right I said it. Tweeds are great for the fall, gives you the extra warmth for the weather and would be great with a matching trouser. Am I wrong? Don’t think so.

1 LUST:

20121004-190842.jpg

Stella McCartney cobalt wool coat:

I am loving absolutely everything Stella McCartney, she’s one of my favourite designers! This year’s FALL 12 collection is stunning. Her prints, sharp tailoring and vibrant colours are great for this season!

This cobalt coloured wool coat is a fall trend my lovelies! Cobalt is THE colour of the season so why not show it off in a coat? Stand out from all the black!

Do you agree?

xx Julie

3 wants, 2 needs, 1 lust – August

6 Aug

This month, Julie and I just can’t help thinking about the Fall season. Especially me! Can I really help it with all the fab fall collections coming out in stores already? (fashion really waits for no one, huh?)

I want want want this two-color gingham dress shirt from J.Crew. I love Gingham print, and I have my mindset on collared shirts and funky, chunky pattern sweaters come fall as one of my staple looks. This plum purple combo would look beautiful with a mustard crew neck sweater or alone tucked into denim.

Perfect Gingham Shirt – $178

The next want I have is a bit of a personal debate. Since I’m only right around 5 feet tall (shorties unite!) Most maxi skirts are quite long and this one in particular which I absolutely adore would absolutely have to be tailored to fit me. I would love to rock it this summer season and love the thought of throwing a cobalt blue sweater over this bad boy come fall.

Sparkle & Fade Maxi Pleated Chiffon Skirt – $59 CAD

This may come off as a bit random, but for those who don’t know. I made the decision pretty much 6 months ago to start taking Accutane for my acne. I am coming close to the end of my “sentence” of taking the pills which have dramatically improved my skin (post to come), however whilst taking Accutane, I haven’t been able to wear colored glosses or more importantly LIPSTICK! My lips are too dry to bear it, and I’ve just been wearing Aquaphor or blistex which has been quite hard since I  want to wear lip products. This YSL in #30 in “Faubourg Peach” is at the top of my list.

YSL Rouge Volupte Lipstick – $34 CAD

These camo print trousers from Zara are a NEED for me. I love the skinny fit and the zipper detail. Again, this piece is perfect for fall with some boots as modeled here or even this August with some sandals and a vintage tee.

Zara Camouflage Trousers $54.90 CAD

I made a “quick” stop into Sephora the other day to take a look at some lightweight foundations and got a whiff of this gem. “Stella” by Stella Mc Cartney is no new addition to the perfume game. In fact, it’s been around for quite a while. How could I have missed this? I am a perfume fanatic, and this baby is a winner. Notes of amber, rose, and peony flower make this perfume very feminine without being fruity. It’s sexy without being too deep or musky. NEED this one for sure.
Stella by Stella McCartney – 1.6oz $72 CAD

Hmm. Simplicity at it’s best. Who better to deliver than Elizabeth and James? This soft coral dress is absolutely beautiful. I love the length, the cut and the effortless,”no-need-for-anything-else-yet-if-I-wanted-to-add-a-statement-piece-I-could’esque” feel of this piece. Definitely lust, since alas, $400 is a bit too steep for me, so the search continues.

Elizabeth & James “Brigitte” Dress in Apricot $411 CAD

What have you had your eye on ?? Let us know in the comments 🙂

I met Michelle Phan !

22 Jun

When word came of Michelle Phan making an appearance in Toronto, my all-time favorite YouTube guru? I knew I had to be there.
I’ve only been watching Michelle on YouTube for years now! Since the beginning, I have been a true Phan-atic. When I was suffering with really bad acne, I turned to makeup to try to cover it up and make me feel better. I found one of Michelle Phan’s first few videos on YouTube, and I was addicted. She not only helped me with tips and tricks to enhance the beauty I did have but just couldn’t see but she motivates me to this day to really reach for the stars. She went from a student in school filming YouTube videos on her laptop, to this global phenomenon who now is the creator of Fawn Inc. Her own brand for all women meant to inspire, teach, and innovate.
Her makeup tutorials have gone viral, her personality lights up the screen, she is always so positive and she has been and continues to be a true inspiration to myself, women and young girls all over the world. I had the blessed opportunity to meet her at The Bay-Yorkdale today after she was interviewed by Vanessa Craft of Elle Canada. The idea of meeting her was only a dream to me. Standing in a hot line for 2 hours was more than worth it to be able to tell her how much I love her and what she’s done to inspire me. I was SO nervous! I even snagged a hug! Here are some pics ❤

If you haven’t for some ODD reason checked out Michelle Phan or Fawn yet. Check her channel out here

Feel free to also check out Chriselle Lim here who is one of the most amazing fashion stylists who has also inspired me.
